Measurements Liver Size
### Liver Size Examination Summary
**PREPARATION**
None required.
**POSITION**
Patient is positioned supine, with right anterior oblique positioning to demonstrate the porta hepatis.
**TRANSDUCER**
A 2.0–6.0 MHz curvilinear transducer is used for imaging.
**METHOD**
Longitudinal views are captured in the midclavicular and midline positions, with measurements taken. Additionally, anteroposterior diameters are recorded at the midpoint of the longitudinal diameters. All measurements are performed during deep inspiration.
**APPEARANCE**
The liver typically presents a uniform pattern of medium-strength echoes.
**MEASUREMENTS**
Liver size can significantly vary based on gender, age, body mass index (BMI), and weight. In the transverse plane, the normal caudate lobe should be less than two-thirds the size of the right lobe.
- **Female Diameter (mean ± SD)**
Midclavicular line (largest craniocaudal diameter): **14.9 ± 1.6 cm**
- **Male Diameter (mean ± SD)**
Midclavicular line (largest craniocaudal diameter): **15.1 ± 1.5 cm**
These values provide a reference for the normal liver size, with slight differences noted between males and females.
